Calf Beginner milk replacers are high performance and easy-mixing milk replacers designed to provide early growth to young calves. Calf Beginner milk replacers are instantized products containing all-milk proteins.
Research Proven Performance
Calf Beginner is part of Hubbard’s Foundation line of milk replacers which have been fed to more than 3000 calves across a variety of environmental and management conditions at the Calf Research Facility, a joint partnership research facility between Hubbard Feeds and the University of Minnesota.
Due to these research efforts, Calf Beginner has been formulated and proven to support early growth during the nursery phase. In addition, when Calf Beginner is coupled with a high quality texturized calf starter feeding program and good management, this can lead to a doubling of birth weight by 60 days of age.
Calf Beginner milk replacers are instantized to ensure easy mixing. Mixing ease is measured by:
- Mixability: ease of going into solution
- Wettability: time to break water tension
- Settle-out: suspendibility of solution
Calf Beginner milk replacers are manufactured to maximize mixability and wetability while minimizing any settle-out.
High Quality Ingredients
Calf Beginner milk replacers are amino acid balanced and utilize all-milk protein ingredients including highly digestible skim milk and whey protein sources. The milk replacer is fully fortified and balanced with optimum mineral and vitamin levels. Calf Beginner is a 20% protein and 20% fat milk replacer.
Calf Beginner contains organic selenium yeast as a standard ingredient to support muscle development, normal immune function, resistance to disease and enhance overall calf nutritional status.
MOS and Essential Oil Options
MOS or mannan-oligosaccharides and essential oils containing specific plant extracts are optional ingredients available in Calf Beginner. Both supplements contribute to maintaining a favorable intestinal environment leading to optimizing nutrient utilization and growth.

Mixing Instructions: Measure 2.0 quarts of clean, warm water (110o F) into a clean bucket. Fill enclosed cup level full (10 ounces) with milk replacer powder. Sprinkle 10.0 ounces (0.625 pound) of milk replacer onto the water surface and mix thoroughly. Feed this amount TWICE a day.
At Birth: Feed 1 gallon of high quality, disease free colostrum within 4 hours of birth followed by another 2 quarts of colostrum or milk replacer 12 hours later.
Day 2: Begin feeding Calf Beginner milk replacer according to tag directions. Offer clean, fresh water at all times.
4 to 35 days of age: Provide a texturized 18% calf starter along with clean, free choice water. Replace daily and keep fresh and clean at all times. Continue to feed Calf Beginner milk replacer according to tag directions.
35 days of age: Reduce milk replacer feeding by 50% when calves are consuming at least 2 lbs. of calf starter daily. Provide free choice water at all times.
42 days of age: Wean completely when calves consume at least 3 pounds of calf starter for 3 days in a row. Offer free choice 18% calf starter and free choice water for two weeks prior to moving and grouping.
Cold Weather Feeding: Newborn calves can experience cold stress at temperatures below 50 degrees F. Options for providing more nutrients to calves during cold stress include:
- Feed up to 50% more milk replacer solution per calf per feeding (feed 3 quarts versus 2 quarts per feeding).
- Add a third 2 quart feeding during the day.
- Add Calf-Cal high energy supplement to the existing milk replacer.
- Offer clean, fresh water at all times.
- Clean, sanitize and air dry feeding and mixing equipment after each feeding.
- Avoid feeding hay prior to weaning.
- House calves in a well ventilated area.
- Provide clean, dry bedding at all times.
